Top 10 Hip Hop Songs 2010

Posted: December 14, 2010 in Hip-Hop, music

The top 10 hip-hop songs of 2010 is an impossible list.  The world was blessed with truckloads of  awesome music after the genre suffered a lackluster year in 2009.  Everybody has their own specific tastes and this year tons of artists were releasing albums.  From The Roots to Nicki Minaj, quality albums and tracks kept flowing from January to December.  I tried to include more of the well known and airplay heavy songs rather than underground or sleepers.

T.I. Probation Information Released

Posted: November 11, 2010 in Hip-Hop

As we know, T.I. is back in jail in Arkansas’ Forest City minimum security prison for violating his probation.  Lil Wayne was recently released and the whole hip-hop world was focused on his first three days free.  Well, when T.I. gets out around October 2011, we can tell you what he’s NOT going to do.  Or at least, what he’s not legally able to do.

Court documents were obtained by TMZ and released on the internet just  days ago regarding T.I.’s new one-year probation terms.

BET.com reports:

one of the terms of Tip’s one-year probation stipulates that the king of the south won’t be able to leave the Northern District of Georgia upon release unless he can prove it’s for “verified employment within the United States,” meaning the rapper won’t be allowed out of the country.

Tip also won’t be able to leave Georgia for more than seven days per month or seven consecutive days. Tip is also barred from driving a vehicle, owning “any firearm, dangerous weapon, or other destructive device” and must submit to drug/alcohol testing and a treatment program.

So basically… no guns, no driving, no drugs or alcohol, no leaving the United States.  The kicker is his confinement to Northern District of Georgia for 23/30 days per month.  It’s going to make touring quite the hassle.  Drugs, alcohol, and guns seem to go hand in hand with most rappers these days, no pun intended.  These probation terms, though harsh, are the best way to attempt to eliminate the problem.

T.I.’s 7th studio album due out December 7th, was changed to “No Mercy” from “King Uncaged” on October 25th.  I guess with the new slew of legal troubles, he didn’t really feel like “Uncaged” would work well in the title if he was actually “caged” in a cell.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Leak

Posted: November 10, 2010 in Hip-Hop, music

Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy leaked yesterday.  Kanye’s much hyped 5th studio album is scheduled for official release on November 22nd.    It really is quite hard to keep an album from leaking these days.  However, most of the Kanye leaks to hit the internet so far are clean versions.  The album sounds pretty genius and artistic, as we’ve come to expect from Kanye.  The album will sound significantly better unedited and with bonus tracks.  Check out songs Hell of a Life and Blame Game, plus all the others, too.

Lil Wayne Released from Jail

Posted: November 5, 2010 in Hip-Hop, music

Lil Wayne is a free man now.  Weezy was released yesterday morning around 8:30 from Rickers Island in New York.  It seems like all we’ve heard for the past 8 months has been “Free Weezy!”

The hip-hop world, especially his Young Money Entertainment crew, is beyond excited about having Weezy back.  Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Birdman were all tweeting their joy. The question now is: what next?  Well, Wayne’s Tha Carter IV is slated for a December 14th release.  I can’t even imagine how many million copies Tha Carter IV is going to sell.  Weezy now has legitimate street cred from this jail stint, which will only make him stronger.

Young Money President Mack Maine explained Weezy’s determination in a recent “RapFix Live” interview. Being in jail forced Lil Wayne to change up his style a bit.  And by that, I mean he has started writing his raps down again, something he hasn’t done since before 2004’s Tha Carter.  Maine said:

“He’s writing. He’s writing music now. Everyone knows that Wayne didn’t write before he went in.  [He’s been] incarcerated for eight months. You can’t remember eight months of material up top.”

Maine also said to expect a “new-and-improved, hungry Wayne.”

“He’s more educated. He was already smart, [but] there’s no such thing as too much knowledge.  Expect a smarter Wayne that’s writing.”

Wayne has to appear in an Arizona court today to sign papers and appear in court for his January 2008 incident in which his tour bus was searched and busted for cocaine, Ecstasy, and a hand gun.  A plea deal was reached in the case in which Weezy has three years of unsupervised probation and some community service.

Saturday the 6th, Lil Wayne is most likely going to make a surprise appearance at Drake’s Las Vegas show.

The next day, the Young Money family will have a huge party at a strip club in Miami.

Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager leaked on the internet today.  Kid Cudi’s highly anticipated sophomore album is out about 12 days ahead of its scheduled November 9th date.

This is quite the Halloween treat I must say.  The album sounds absolutely phenomenal.  Take a listen for yourself.  Here are two places to download the album…

MTV recently announced its annual “Hottest MC in the Game” list and Eminem is rightfully at the top after being amazingly snubbed in 2009.

Em is back at the top (photo courtesy of datpiff.com)

The 2010 list goes as followed:

1. Eminem
2. Jay-Z
3. Kanye West
4. Drake
5. Rick Ross
6. Nicki Minaj
7. Lil Wayne
8. Waka Flocka
9. B.o.B
10. Ludacris

I don’t really understand how Lil Wayne is merely one slot ahead of Waka Flocka.  Granted Weezy has been in jail since early March, but I feel he’s still released enough content and been enough of a buzz in the industry to be ranked a bit higher than 7th.  Rick Ross’s Teflon Don is approaching 500,000, so I guess I can see him at the #5 spot.

I agree with the top 4, though.  Drake’s Thank Me later certainly has had enough success with more than 1.1 million total sales.  Eminem, Jay-Z, and Kanye are all pretty self explanatory, especially Em with his 2.8 million Recovery sales since its June release.

Snubbed perhaps is Bun B, whose Trill O.G. album had success, but perhaps not quite as much as everybody expected, as its only racked up around 100,000.  Bun B’s “No Mixtape” mixtape, released in February 2010, was stacked with excellent freestyles over a rash of popular beats such as Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade,” Snoop Dogg’s “I Wanna Rock,” Lil Wayne’s “Transformer,” and Kevin Rudolf’s “I Made It.”

Lil Wayne’s I am Not a Human Being has just eclipsed 250,000 in total sales, according to hiphopdx.com.  The album sold 125,000 copies this past week, putting it at #1 on the week.

The album was released digitally on September 27th, but didn’t come out in physical form until October 12th, which clearly explains the quick spike in sales.  Wayne has been staying in touch with fans as much as possible and keeping them updated, despite his recent solitary confinement punishment which started around October 4th.  A website created by Weezy’s friends, weezythanxyou.com , has allowed the rapper to publish letters from jail for the fans to stay up to speed with his status.  Wayne has reiterated extensively how much love he has for his dedicated fans, and the fans show love back by supporting him.  T-minus two weeks ’til the Young Money rapper is free and Tha Carter 4 hits stores…

Perhaps you heard rumors over the past few months that Weezy was going to have a huge welcome home concert a day after released.  Well, change in plans fans.  Weezy wants to keep it in the family this time, according to Young Money President Mack Maine.  They plan to fly to Miami and have a party with all of Wayne’s immediate family and closest friends.

A “Welcome Home Weezy” concert is sure to follow soon, though.  Weezy just wants to show people that family always comes first, no matter what.
